Cory Ondrejka's departure in his own words
Massively
Dec 13th 2007 2:08PM As someone said, this appears to be a classic professional differences situation, perhaps over design, engineering, creative or management issues--or all of them. I've seen it happen several times before myself, and as Desmond mentions, look at Apple.
Cory is a hoot and an impressive guy. I'm sure we'll be hearing about him and from him again.

Oct 24th 2007 2:27PM I think you missed the fundamental underlying difference between education professionals and corporate or business professionals. This is common amongst people who do not have experience in both fields.
Educators care about people and learning--both of which are difficult to measure accurately, and in many cases don't have to be measured accurately. General trends will suffice; students do learn at varying rates, and happiness is key to being a good teacher or a good student. Education is a long-term investment and somewhat intangible.
Business people have to, ultimately, only worry about one thing: money. And this is often "Other People's Money" (OPM) that carries an ethical and legal responsibility to track to as accurate a level as possible over time and continuously. This is called "due diligence." A business person (or an engineer, for that matter--btw, engineering is a business) should be able to tell a client or customer exactly where they are in resources expended and in their schedule at any time.
So, you're trying to make an apples and oranges comparison, sort of like comparing tending an olive orchard to designing a new airliner--it's invalid and not relevant to understanding either of the disciplines.
NetLibertarians vs. NetAuthoritarians
Second Life Insider
Jul 18th 2007 10:45AM Life is all about choices. From a Libertarian perspective, you have the choice of revealing who you are or not, but either way you take personal responsibility for the decision. The Authoritarian stance strips you of both the right to choose and the responsibility for making any decisions--so all you have left is the chance to walk off the cliff with the rest of the lemmings.

Jun 20th 2007 4:59PM Wow, I was going to comment on the intellectual and emotional shallowness of Candace's article, but it's just to easy to pick it apart--it'd be like shooting sheep from a helicopter gunship.

Did you mean "amok" or "amuck"? I imagine they're doing both...!

Jun 1st 2007 11:37AM Hmmm...without flying off the handle into political rhetoric, I just have to wonder if Daniel Linden's statement was reviewed by anyone else before he posted it. I can see one person being that out of touch with reality, but I'd like to think that at least a few Lindens are in better touch with their primary user base.
I do have to say that statements like this make me rethink my plans to buy an island and get more involved in SL--not because of the contents of the message, or even its supercilious tone, but just because it was made at all. It reeks of ignorance, of history and of the residents, and incompetence, in that someone with a better grasp of the situation did not edit it before it was published.
New First Look viewer released, with Windlight

The new viewer ran flawlessly for me on the first go! Breathtaking, and seemed to sharpen up not just the skies, but water and some scenery, too. The only flaws I noticed was at high altitude (600+ meters) near sim borders, where I definitely got some color separation at those borders from certain angles. No effect on performance, except perhaps a few more fps.
As an aviator, I think this is pretty d*mn brilliant!
