Blogging New Orleans

Aug 31st 2007 3:43PM From the early 1960's until present, Deacon John and myself created a true friendship, based on respect, love of music and life experiences together.

Deacon John is loved and respected by thousands of those who grew up listening to his music, and sharing the most funloving, exciting times of their lives.

From the dances at F&M Patio, on Lyons and Tchoupitoulas, through the hundreds of highschool proms, through the private parties of socialites, and the most memorable lounge shows in New Orleans history, Deacon John has brought more people together, through his music and entertainment, than any other local performer in New Orleans history.

From the day he began honing his skills at Lenfant's Boulevard Room on Canal Blvd., here in New Orleans, in the early 1960's, till present, he has touched more people with his singing and playing guitar than any other local musician I can think of.

He brought together the largest group of vocalists locally, to perform at The St. Paul's High School Prom in 1969, in the history of New Orleans to this date.
They included, Ernie K-doe, Irma Thomas, Art Neville, Aaron Neville, Benny Spellman, Shirley and Lee, Curley Moore, Bobby Mitchell, Chris Kenner, Oliver Morgan, Tommy Ridgley, Bobby Ridgley, Willie T, Escurita, Bea Booker, Danny White, and The Aubrey Twins, and many more. This senior prom, was just a kickoff to hundreds of proms to follow in the future, that would bring joy and excitement to everyone on their road to college.

My intention, is to one day soon, with the help and cooperation of friends, fans and those who lived their lives enjoying Deacon John, to pay one last final tribute to him, in the form of a "old style", dance, at a large ballroom in a major hotel.

I can never repay this wonderful man and friend, for all of the thrills and enjoyment he brought to me, and the thousands and thousands whose lives he has touched, with his entertainment, his love and his integrity.

God Bless You "Deac"!
