Survivor Spotlight: Tom Batiuk, Creator of Funky Winkerbean

The Cancer Blog

Sep 20th 2007 7:56AM Mr. Batiuk, I just read today's Funky Winkerbean. I was again overwhelmed by thoughts of my mother's last couple of months as a victim of melanoma. I noticed that Lisa had an IV for pain meds. We were blessed by Helping Hands Hospice of Lima, Ohio. They were able to provide all of Mother's medications in gel form or patch so that she didn't have to suffer from needles. It made it possible for us to care for her, and she was able to stay in her own home until her death. I know that this storyline is hard for many to understand, but it does show another possibility for care in the end stages of life. While I do shed tears as I read it, I still read it faithfully. It gives me a way to "vent" my own feelings about the mother I loved so much.
