Survivor Spotlight: Tom Batiuk, Creator of Funky Winkerbean
The Cancer Blog
Sep 24th 2007 7:23PM After reading the article in our Sunday newspaper, "Does tragic battle with cancer belong on the comic pages?", I felt compelled to add my voice to the group. I too, have stage 4 breast cancer that has metasticized in my liver and, for me, the story line has been very personal.
I look at the other strips that appear on our comic pages & find Doonesbury & Non Sequitur right with Funky Winkerbean. Now, tell me, shouldn't this grandmother be concerned about her grandchildren reading those strips as well? I think I would.
The way Tom Batiuk has approached this awful disease shows the amount of thought he has put into the series. The concerns, the thoughts, the worries and most of all the love that Lisa has received from her friends & family, especially her husband, shines right through. Also the bravery, the fortitude, and the determination Lisa has shown is certainly a role model for many patients to emulate. In fact, when this series started, I told my Doctor at Duke University Medical Clinic about it & encouraged her to follow it.
Also, I bet that grandmother would be appalled if her grandchildren read Harry Potter as well. And, for me, I have found a wonderful gift in the latest Harry Potter book about facing death.
Actually, between Lisa Moore & Harry Potter, I have found more comfort in those fictional characters than any live support group! I guess everyone faces their own demons in their own way.
Oh, just to let you know, I am a 65 year old woman, run my own business, very active in Rotary, have a wonderful husband that is my staff, do a lot of traveling amongst other things.
No, no grandchildren but if I did, I'd like for them to follow the lives of Lisa & Les Moore because their creator's approach has been open & honest about cancer as it runs it horrific course. Tom Batiuk has done a service to all in taking on such a compelling issue.
