Bruce and Tears in "City of Ruins"

Blogging New Orleans

May 1st 2006 1:24AM As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, it has been my privledge to travel to New Orleans many times over the years. I have always loved the city and have relished every visit. While not for the festival, I had a meeting to attend last week there and was the first time I'd been back since Katrina. I must admit, there was a little trepidation on what I would find in the city I love. So what did I find?? Yes, there is destruction throughout. Piles of broken homes and broken lives lie in every median. What truly struck me however, was the resolve of the people of New Orleans. Amidst the falling down buildings, the city was ALIVE!! Little by little, businesses are reopening, homes are rebuilding, and despite all the rhetoric from lesser people that NOLA would fall off the map, the citizens are out there, rebuilding their lives and proclaiming "We're down but not out!!" What a relief it was to drive through the Garden District and Audobon Zoo, To walk down Canal Street and through the quarter, and see the Life. It will take time but New Orleans will be back, better than ever!!
