Something Is Rotten In Orlando

AOL Sports Blog

Apr 14th 2008 10:51AM Unfortunately it seems that a lot of players deaths are met with public silence from the universities these days -- it's probably because each time the death is met with civil lawsuits. The more the school says publicly, the more chance some of the words can be twisted and used against them.

Football is a dangerous sport and the object behind practice is to be pushed to higher and higher limits. If it wasn't a tough practice, than O'leary and company wouldn't be doing a good job coaching.

What needs to happen though, is that UCF needs to investigate to make sure that all possible steps were taken to protect the players safety. Players opinions and accounts need to be taken, but I think the general public needs to accept the emotional aspect to some folks speaking out anonymously -- these are 20 year old kids who may be dealing with the death of a close friend for the first time. It's natural for them to seek blame.

Truly an unfortunate situation, my prayers are with the friends/family of the player, and also with the coaching staff -- regardless of what they did or did not do, I'm sure this has been tremendously tough on them as well.

Feb 3rd 2008 10:17PM @Asymetrical - What does the CEO being Indian have anything to do with it? Does that exempt him from knowing his American audience?

Or, heck, maybe he does know his audience, maybe they want the controversy. To think that it wouldn't upset a few folks would be a bit ignorant.

Anchors Downtown Orlando

Jan 11th 2008 3:26PM I think the new basketball arena will play a large part in developing a new 'district' of sorts. Seems to be a perfect situation to bring in retail west of I-4.

The other place to watch is the "sodo" development, just south of what is the current downtown area along Orange. The big anchor is a big box (target), but otherwise there might be potential in the immediate area.

Banning live-blogging from sports? Good luck.

Jan 2nd 2008 9:50PM I've been noticing the distinction between blog and blog posts eroding, and it's annoying as sin.

The MSM has gotten behind blogging, and they're spreading all this incorrect terminology by using improper language. "Check out our blogs on [whatever issue/story]". Ugh. Blog. Posts.

Regarding the NCAA, that's just absolutely silly and is a reminder for how many folks still don't understand technology.

Separate, but sorta funny/similar vein (to me, at least).. I was on a flight the other day and they said "turn off anything with a power button." The stewardess came by and reminded me to turn off my iphone. "But it doesn't have a power button." The look of confusion on her face was outstanding.

The idea of people "mo-blogging" a live event is still probably just as mind blowing a concept as a phone without a distinct power button.

Man, I should write a blog on this.

Dec 3rd 2007 9:23PM I'm 100% with you on the 16 teams, I just figure 8 teams might be a first step.. Well, a second or third step.. Plus one is probably the first step.

Did you see the yahoo sports writers 16 team playoff scenario? It was brilliant.

As ideal as it may sound, the value just doesn't outweigh the potential risks. Not now, at least.

Homecoming at Home, Week 10...

Nov 5th 2007 10:10AM UCF has never been a dry campus, as we've had on campus alcohol in restaurants/bars since before I even attended (Locos in my day, wild pizza before that.. now there's a few). Regarding game day alcohol, that's pretty much par for the course at any university. It's just not allowed in the stadium (it's an NCAA thing).

Regarding your neighborhood and lawn though, that's a shame to hear. With so much on campus parking, there isn't much reason for folks to be out and about in those neighborhoods. I know this year was a learning year for the University. Hopefully they'll continue to reach out and listen. If you have any concrete suggestions or ideas, I have the email of the person to talk to somewhere around here. I can look.

Question for you -- can you hear the crowd during the game from where you are at? How about lights? I know there were some concessions made on all that during the planning stages with some traditions cut out, etc.

(email and in comment section)

Best,

Alex
