Princeton's SL Woes
Second Life Insider
Sep 25th 2007 3:28AM Princeton is supposed to be a leader in education, and in this day and age, that does not come from passivity but from testing important new technologies.
I am glad to see Princeton on the frontier trying to understand the future, even if that comes with some bumps. Failure is not a bad thing if you are pushing the envelope and learning as you go.

Sep 10th 2007 11:47AM You changed the name SLBoutique to OnRez, but your article still says that Shop OnRez charges commissions. I just wanted to clarify that it is a free site and there are no royalties or commissions taken.

Sep 6th 2007 8:42PM I just appended my post with the following note:
Someone from Linden Lab has reached out to me and let me know that this is a video file error, not a deliberate edit, which is nice to hear (and yes, I do believe them!). I did note in my discussion that this letter was more about Linden Lab's need to deal with a perception among the community than a particular case. Even if this perception is due to misunderstandings, it is something to actively address because it's been simmering for some time.
As I've noted before, I think Linden Lab's heart is in the right place.

Jun 30th 2007 1:53PM re: that third point Akela, it will come. Technology for technology's sake is no good. People didn't jump on the Web magically all at once either. You started by needing to look something up, or perhaps you wanted to buy a book online, or you thought this free email thing might be useful.
As virtual world experiences and content grows out as the technology scales and the audiences get bigger, people will find more reasons to come.

May 23rd 2007 12:06AM That initial clickz article was off base. It has since been updated and made a little more accurate, including some words actually coming directly from Marc Schiller at EA:

Oct 30th 2006 9:00PM You think that's weird? Millions of human beings, sometimes by themselves, sometimes in gatherings, meet on a regular basis to get inebriated and watch yet more human beings knock around a stuffed animal skin. And they do this in a rich 3D organic world, where they could use that same time to achieve some higher order thing like a create a novel, scientific treatise, or new art form.
Life is short. As long as you're not harming someone else, if it makes you happy, go for it. Not everyone has to be cutting edge. SL is hardly devoid of weird cool stuff.
Don't fret about what other people do. Focus on what makes YOU tick and go make it happen.

Sep 8th 2006 12:14AM Well, I have not been aware of any of this going on, and am not sorry for that fact. I felt terrible for Lost when his skin was blatantly ripped off and resold a few months ago. However, I do not see the problem in this case. The alterations were done for personal use. In RL, I can go buy a Burberries scarf and spray paint it if I want to.
Now, I know that the vulnerability of textures in SL is causing a lot of pain and problems, and maybe that overall frustration is the root of all of this, but this shouldn't be the issue to fight over.

Aug 19th 2006 11:32AM Freedom and tolerance of others are two of the most important things about Second Life that must be preserved. There are lots of things within SL that will make one or more groups uncomfortable, but if the various parties on either side aren't actively griefing anybody and if it isn't an issue so repugnant that LL actually bans it, then freedom must be respected.
