Second Citizen No More!
Second Life Insider
Sep 18th 2007 10:35PM There is no point in soliciting speculation as to why the site is closing. Long time members have a pretty good understanding of why it has come to and end. It is not just one reason, or even a handful of reasons, and there is no one answer to why, except that the owner has decided it is time. No scapegoat to point a finger at, though some are trying.
I've been very lucky to get to know MotherFIC over the past few months in dealing with a hosts of dramas that have arisen from posts on the site, and I am sorry to see it go. My brief time dealing with the utter chaos made me see what he deals with, and he has my respect for doing so as long as he has. You can't just set up another forum or take it over and have it be SC - the place was his vision, and had his touch all over it. The site will be missed, and his efforts are enormously appreciated.
Just Askin': Project Open Letter aftermath
Second Life Insider
May 7th 2007 12:51AM As the director and spokesperson for Project Open Letter, I wanted to offer a couple of comments. It is way too premature to call it a success or failure. It has not even been a week since the email went out. It has been an initial success - it certainly got Linden Lab's attention, as well as the attention of the media (which has responded with some fairly negative coverage of Second Life). Cory's response especially was quite candid, though the Town Hall was an enormous letdown. What happens next remains to be seen - but the work of the project is far from over. Linden Lab has not even officially responded yet. One thing is for certain - this is only the start.
Just Askin': Do they have the obligation?
Second Life Insider
Mar 15th 2007 5:21PM It is not so much whether or not LL has an obligation to permit or prohibit certain activities on their servers. For any business, it comes down to their exposure legally. It is not so much LL acting as the moral police as it is them protecting themselves from legal liability. There are so many gray areas and wildly divergent precedents on when a service provider is or is not liable for the activities of its users (for example, Napster, the DMCA Safe Habor clause, etc.). I think as LL continues to get more positive and negative exposure, you will continue to find that their once "live and let live sort of attitude becomes a more pragmatic one of CYA.
Thoughts on Ageplay
Second Life Insider
Mar 6th 2007 1:28AM For someone who is purporting themselves to explain what "age play" is, you have done a major disservice to the topic by choosing to whitewash over the predominant nature of the practice. What you a are speaking of is not even age play. Those involved with non-sexual role playing of a child are quick to distance themselves from the age play label for the very reason that it is about sex.
Age play is not about putting on a child av while you sculpt or role playing having a baby. The vast majority of age play activity going on in SL is sexual in nature. To claim otherwise is to be ignorant to the reality of what is going on. You can't put a bow around it and make it pretty. Age play in SL is about role playing child sex, incest and molestation.
Hopefully it is at least two consenting adults taking part in these activities. It doesn't make it less repugnant, but given SL's free for all registration policies now, you can't be certain if it is a child or not. The activity may not be as legally protected as some seem to think either. It will take some legal action to put it to the test and set some precedents. Given the dramatic rise of the practice in SL in the past 6 months (including a sim dedicated to child sex), it won't be too long hopefully before someone challenges it legally.
Instead of telling those who find the practice disturbing to seek out help, perhaps you should advise those who get their sexual fulfillment from pretending to be having sex with a child seek help immediately. The odds of that behavior spilling over into RL pursuits and fueling things like consumption of child pornography and worse are incredibly high. For you to end your article with such a stupid, flippant comment is nauseating. Actually the whole article is pathetic - you know nothing about the topic and instead present a Disneyfied version of child rape role play. Congrats, you should be really proud. I'm sure AOL is thrilled to be sponsoring this.

Second Citizen Takedown
Second Life Insider
Nov 26th 2006 3:58PM The contact email address to reach the owner of secondcitizen.com is in the registration information for the website and is available doing a standard whois lookup. The registration information is protected by DomainsByProxy for privacy purposes, but a contact email is provided that forwards to the owner's email. I tested it yesterday and the owner received the email with no problem. Apotheus chose to not use this email address, though he had to use the same registration information to find out who the ISP was. His rights to have the information removed are not in question. His behavior in pursuing the removal is the issue, and on this, he failed miserably to act in any kind of good faith.
Getting it right: Nissan launches in SL
Second Life Insider
Oct 24th 2006 12:22PM I agree that this particular project has been a great success. I have been going to opening after opening for months of various commercial projects, and this is one of the few I have ever really connected with. The whole thing was a lot of fun - the cars are well made and I love the customization options (unlike the disappointing Scion project in SL, from a car company supposedly all about customizing). I especially like the way it is all presented - the giant car vending machine, the loops, the open space to drive on, etc. It was all just about having fun. Congrats to everyone involved - this project shows that companies coming into SL should find ways to connect with the users and provide an engaging experience, not just throw ads at them. I haven't had that much fun with vehicles in a long time in SL.
Wired calls Second Life the coolest place on the web
Second Life Insider
Sep 23rd 2006 11:31PM Congratulations to Aimee, and to SL - as always, it is great to see SL in the mainstream press more and more. I'm jealous, I only made the Wired web site, not the print version :)
