The infamous [at least to me] and ubiquitous presence of the casserole in the mid-West might be the prototype for those MREs. However, this might be a chicken/egg or terrorism/Iraq war binary worth leaving alone.
Had I been more industrious last fall, I would have initiated an Underground Railroad for casseroles sent from the mid-West to the Gulf Coast. Think of all the broccoli and Velveeta, pasta and Steak-Ums, or green beans [canned of course] and Cheez-Its that could have helped returning New Orleanians [and Mexican "subcontractors"]. The sublimity of casseroles, indeed.
