CSI brings tide not torrent
Second Life Insider
Oct 26th 2007 12:57PM Just a note on the webserver issues, we did have to make some optimizations to better handle load. The biggest problem was on the download side for the OnRez Viewer -- a combination of Amazon's EC2 and S3 services was not handling demand properly, slowing things down, and we had to remove EC2 from the equation. Once we were solely using S3 for downloads, things were running smoothly. (at least, this is my understanding)
The other challenge we faced was that Linden Lab's registration portal requires passwords be sent via email after an avatar name is chosen, and due to the large number of registrations, it looks like some got lost in spam filters or potentially blocked by ISPs -- we're trying to investigate. We all need a better solution because a blocked email only leads to confused people who cannot log in.

Oct 24th 2007 3:07PM Eloise, you can also detach viewer by typing "/9999 detach" in your chat.
Paul, I gather that there are some memory issues that come from the SL code base, but I would love to hear more details from you that I can have the devs look at. If you have spotted a hack around the Shop OnRez vendors, I really want to hear what this is.
You can totally legitimately argue that we let SLBoutique stagnate after we bought it, but we've been actively developing the Shop OnRez service, so I don't think that is fair. I don't think it's fair to accuse us of short attention spans on brand-related stuff because we can't control a client's level of commitment. However, OnRez is not dependent on client budgets or approval -- this is ours, and we want to make it great. I will convince you with actions not words, and hope over the next few months we successfully change your mind.
Can you IM me directly in SL (Forseti Svarog) with more info?

Oct 11th 2007 2:13AM Nacon, all the functionality of the current viewer should be there. You can still build, you can still shout, you can still fly, you can still take pictures, but we simplified the interface and removed those buttons. There is also a map and mini-map.
Not everyone is going to love this viewer -- it is certainly not designed for the power user -- but I hope you give it a chance and I look forward to your feedback once you've actually used it.
As for Shop OnRez, I was pleased to see that OnRez won the recent SecondStyle blog poll as the best SL ecommerce site out there.
Ben Folds Post-Event Wrap-up with Photos
Second Life Insider
Oct 24th 2006 9:00PM The grumpy posts are coming from people who weren't actually there. Ah, but the storm in a teacup rages on nevertheless, no?
And no prok, if you read my original announcement you can see that it was billed as a live chat: http://blogs.electricsheepcompany.com/giff/?p=118
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that sharing the audio and video streams just would not have captured the energy and quirkiness and fun of this event. In the end, this was like Ben Folds showing up at a tiny club in Brooklyn... lucky for the fans who could be there, and not the end of the world for those who could not.
For other events of a different nature, we will be opening up audio and video streams. As for this particular one, I'm sorry you felt left out prok.

Oct 23rd 2006 10:37PM "You can just imagine explaining it to your mum: "And then, and then he got out his light sabre...". Yeah, you definitely had to be there."
I was thinking the same thing.
You did have to be there. An audio stream and probably even a video stream would not have come close to relating the actual event experience. I think it sucks that events have to be so small right now, but that's the state of the technology.
Of course, that won't stop certain folks from being nasty about it, but that is expected.
