Instructors to merge with mentors?

Second Life Insider

Nov 24th 2006 6:01PM Ah! The "Leadership of Pathfinder Linden" - is that a bit like "The Leadership of Kenny Linden"? How long did he last? 2 months? Or is it more like "The Leadership of Jeska Linden"? Oh, she's been booted out as well!

Leadership? Oh dear oh dear...dont make me laugh!

Just Askin': How many of you have been hurt by CopyBot?

Second Life Insider

Nov 17th 2006 6:50AM I don't sell "products", so I haven't been affected, except for some forex exposure when the L$ looked like it was going to start heading for 300 again.

If I was designing and selling content I would definitely have been concerned though. The panic is understandable, although, as someone has already mentioned, it is more to do with LL's response than the actual copy bot.

Nov 13th 2006 7:34AM Oh thats a shame....does this mean that the big "we can have everything for free" exercise will come to an end? I'll miss it, what a lovely period of self delusion that was!

Nov 10th 2006 6:23AM Put it down to a natural cynicism if you will, but it isn't so many months back that I made a comment along the lines of "Linden Lab will be happy for residents to work for them until it no longer suits their purpose, then it will simply be a case of 'sorry mate, we don't need you anymore. bye', and people will be left standing around wondering why the wasted their time. In the meantime, Linden Lab will be off having lunch with the head of Amazon, or whoeever is current corporate flavour of the month".

Well.... how can I put this..um... TA DA!!!!!

SL Broadband TV

Second Life Insider

Nov 8th 2006 7:32AM I actually do like the idea of having TV and radio services in SL. Aside from the fact that listening to/watching stuff with people in-world is a fun social activity, it also serves to reinforce the feeling of being in SL as being "in another country" which, despite the fact that it isn't what SL is supposed to be about nowadays (the marketing spin has moved on), I still like a lot.

Not the nine-o-clock news

Second Life Insider

Nov 8th 2006 7:23AM Quite some time ago I had a discussion about the effects of large "real life" businesses coming into SL, and the way that they would start to push to the background those organisations that had evolved purely within SL. Nobody seemed to be particularly convinced, but here we see the process in action.

If you are able to say (for instance) "This is SL's very first tabloid" and market that supposed fact sufficiently aggressively, and it becomes common perception that it really IS the very first tabloid in SL. Perception is reality. In the meantime, the various organisations that have actually been providing tabloids in SL for a significant time will be left somewhere in the back row desperately shouting "Excuse me....we've already done that...hello...can you hear us??" but unfortunately they will be inaudible above the corporate loudspeakers.

Its happened with newspapers, now watch it happen with other parts of SL business.

Learning from it? Or just repeating it?

Nov 7th 2006 12:35PM I think most people would struggle to place me in the category of "elist tekkies" - my last feeble attempts at programming were on a BBC Model B about 21 years ago.

But as far as sneering at AOL is concerned, I did, I do, I will continue to do so.

What got me keen on using "the net" was a very simple premise of "Pay an ISP a fee, they let you into the world of the internet - then you're on your own, go where you will" (Or do what thou wilt, if you're feeling particularly mystical about it).

If I had started my net activities with AOL, where I was presented with everything arranged in nice neat, regulated and vetted menus for me to "keep me safe" or whatever other myth their marketing campaign was based on, I would have lost interest very quickly.

And oddly enough, taking a walk through a 3D virtual Walmart (yes I know we don't have them in SL but its only a matter of time) really doesn't interest me either.

Nov 6th 2006 11:13AM And just as many of us wouldn't touch AOL with a barge pole.

They were another bunch of bloody social engineering advocates weren't they. Taking their net users by the hand to guide them to all of the nicely moderated, regulated and approved sites that they were allowed to see.

If LL will at best be like the AOL of the virtual world universe AT BEST, I'd hate to see what they become at worst!

Yes, millions may have used them, but then theres lots of gullible people in the world aren't there. And I'm not even counting Alts.
