Yesterday's Money: 31st March

Second Life Insider

Apr 2nd 2007 12:23AM The WSE website went down for maintenance. Which explains the little money traded. Most traders trade stock via the WSE website due to the in game lag on stock information updates.

Expect the WSE to be low for the following few days as the site will be offline for a few days.

Multicore balancing in client

Second Life Insider

Feb 6th 2007 2:52AM Having a dual core CPU now, I cant imagine I lived without one. The world is so much nicer while having SL and Photoshop open at the same time (altho it requires some above average memory). :-)

Now only if my battery life would hold up more than 1.5 hours running those two on battery, my life would be complete.

Vista Breaks SL?

Second Life Insider

Feb 6th 2007 2:07AM There is a work around for any NVidia Driver for Vista. Because all NVidia GPU's do use a generic driver that is tweaked in the GFX card specific install while building the driver package.

Check out http://www.omegadrivers.net/nvidia.php or http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ for modded .inf files so you can use the latest forceware drivers on any card.

I used this trick to get my notebook with a NVidia Quadro NVS110M going with the Vista RC1 and RC2, because the Nvidia driver from Microsoft in RC1 prevented me even from installing Vista.

I don't know if it works the same way for Vista RTM but i guess it would (I am still on RC2 build 5744). Once you have installed the tweaked driver, run SL and you will see the generic driver warning is gone.

Although it might be that SL is still giving you the wrong information about the GFX card's memory size. (eg. mine says it has only 64, while SL on XP [dual boot] reports 256 with the official Nvidia driver).

Try this, I bet it would help.

Does Vista jump the shark in Second Life strip clubs?

Second Life Insider

Feb 1st 2007 2:49AM It is working like a charm, since Vista RC1 with then the tweaked NVidia drivers to get my Quadro card working. I am still on RC2 but about to migrate to RTM version.

To my opinion, SL seems to be more stable and not noticeable slower than on XP (on the same machine).

What i hope (but i bet it sticks to hope) that the open source community reach out and build a DirectX 10 version of the client. :-)

People searches to change - lower load but sans online status

Second Life Insider

Jan 30th 2007 5:38AM It isn't silly, it is probably a (or two) join less in the SQL query, if they loose the online status.

And joins in SQL queries are always possible slowdowns in returning result sets. They did all other optimizations to the DB before skipping a join in a SQL query. I think this is one of their last resorts they can tackle.

The real problem isn't with in the queries asked via search, but in the infrastructure, clustering, centralization and fail-over of their current DB solution as far i can see it.

So see the skipping online status in search results as a quick fix for the short term while restructuring their DB architecture (and probably other parts of the SL architecture) is their long term solution to be able to scale up and out.

Wishlist - Textual enhancements

Second Life Insider

Dec 20th 2006 7:05AM Isnt there a change request for this already? If so we could provide all our votes to it to get it. I sure want a more richer text. Even on IRC i use the proposed shortcuts ", : and ;. :-)

Just Askin': What's your best seller?

Second Life Insider

Dec 20th 2006 2:36AM It would either be the basic bra/panties set in Rose Lace, priced at L$ 200 or one of the animal print covered bikini set with a tiny thong and little top priced at L$ 175.

The rose laced lingerie is a suprise, because it is a line of products not aimed at strippers/dancers/escorts, but more for the "normal" female avie. Appearantly there is a market for it.

Animal skin printed bikinis just look sexy, so they sell.

[ADVERT]And ofcourse *couchs* all Down Undies products are quality stuff. :-)[/ADVERT]

Just Askin': What will you be doing during the update?

Second Life Insider

Dec 13th 2006 1:57AM I will enjoy real life like there wasn't a second life to live.

Big Brother is Being Watched by You!

Nov 7th 2006 2:06AM The guy from Endemol who was around on the sim last night ensured that the land tiers will be paid for at least a year. And they are thinking of paying them for two years.

Nevertheless I still think this is a reaction on the hype in the Dutch media about Second Life since last month.
