Jan 10th 2007 10:42AM Mars, given your first impression of the code being impenetrable and thus difficult to maintain, what is your take on those, like Dave Winer, who already say it's only a matter of time until someone reverse-engineers the server code or builds an open-source implementation that talks to the viewer?

Jan 10th 2007 10:34AM I concur with just about all of the above, but I also think that almost anything in a virtual metaverse can look and feel disturbing, "Uncanny Valley-style" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley - if you look at it the right way.. I think it's curious enough that the Lab managed to design adjustable avatars that most users don't freak out over right away :)

If I was asked to share my thoughts on it, I'd tentatively suggest that it has something to do with the compression / streaming decompression of the various supported sl image formats into and from jpeg2000 via Kakadu. → see http://www.kakadusoftware.com/
