When virtual celebrity mimics real life
Second Life Insider
Sep 9th 2007 11:37AM Hi Moo
Very nicely put. Yes, I agree, it's easier to be celebrity in SL than in RL because of the multi-tasking abilities we have in SL and of course the ability to log off so that normal conversations can be time shifted via e-mails.
The trouble is when you get too many IMs flowing in at the same time on a constant basis. I also totally "get" how uplifting it feels to speak to people who want to talk to you, I love that feeling, but when it gets busy there needs to be a more passive way to politely say "hold off a sec, gotta get this done". In RL, if people are there with you it's often easy to tell how busy you are because they can see the activity around you. At SLCC when we were trying to make our way to the dining hall, you may have noticed that when that person stopped us all to chat (and we risked not getting there in time for the meal), I politely said to the person let's walk and talk or we'll miss the meal. They could appreciate the situation at a glance and it was accepted readily.
In SL, I've started teleporting people to me when I get hundreds of IMs so that they can experience my own communication load and respectfully take turns or speak to others with similar interests instead of it all going through me directly. So, in a way, my virtual communication bandwidth issues are resolved by resorting to how it's limited in RL.
It was very nice to meet you in person at SLCC 2007 and glad we had some time to chat. I didn't get to meet quite a few people who were looking for me and some I was specifically trying to meet myself.
SLCC is definitely very fun to attend as a guest and not the organizer. A big thanks to all who sacrificed their time for it all to be possible.
Immersionists vs. Augmentationists 2: The Voicening
Second Life Insider
Aug 15th 2007 2:58PM Using voice does not mean you are bad person, nor does it mean you are narrow-minded. It is intolerance and prejudice that separates people.
And so, again, we shall see history repeat.

So far, if we see that someone has voice disabled, we revert to text chat.
In my club (Timeless Underground) the chat areas are now parcelled off so as not to spoil it for the people dancing.
New challenges bring new solutions. :)
Some people cannot type, but they can talk. Remember that too. It's not all about you.

Good shepherd or invasion of privacy?
Second Life Insider
Apr 12th 2007 3:19PM This is too invasive and a precedent should not be set based on one bot but potentially thousands more that will come in the future.
"Get off my land" and "opt in" spring to mind.
I'll be turning on Health and sitting on the porch with my shottie. :)
Fair game.
Just Askin': Do you have an arch-enemy?
Second Life Insider
Dec 24th 2006 3:25AM Not really any enemies, but there is one person who just refuses to be my friend because of a false perspective she chooses to have of me.
