Linden Lab to license network advertisers in Second Life

Massively

Sep 6th 2008 12:02AM Nightbird--the policy should not affect NCI. Jack Linden explicitly states that, "By Network advertising we are specifically referring to the practice of using many parcels over multiple regions, especially small micro parcels where the predominant purpose of the land is to hold advertising."

I think we are pretty safe.

However, if it should turn out that this policy will require us to close AdNode, then AdNode goes. The benifit to the general SL community is too great for me to even think of opposing this policy.

NCI can raise the money some other way if we have to. We've done it before--we can do it again.

Second Life media myth three revisited - easy money

It took you two months of paying Tier (Land Use Fees) before you realized it was paid in US$? And you are giving financial advice? Like most SL residents, I figured out that one immediately upon reading the Premium account section of the SL website.

Of course Linden Lab collects their fees in US$. What do you think their vendors and employees want to be paid in? They are a business. They have to make money to stay in business. And their biggest revenue stream is land use fees. Is it a “convenient” conspiracy when your ISP wants US$? Your grocery store? The IRS? No. It is the normal course of business.

As for selling “inflated virtual air” for L$, you have a point there. It’s handy to own the currency printing press. That’s why governments make sure they have a monopoly on their currency. But private currencies are not illegal in the US (were Linden Lab operates). Like any store of value, they are only as good as people’s faith in them. Currency inflation is a real risk in SL—just as it is in any economy. So far, Linden Lab has operated with commendable restraint, keeping the L$ to US$ exchange rate within a 25L$ range since they started selling “printed” L$.

liftingoffers wrote: “This is a trap my friends. It will be used for a huge lever to trap and make you lose everything invested.”

I assume you are suggesting that Linden Lab will print hyperinflate the money supply, causing people’s L$ holdings to become worthless, thereby wrecking their economy, and driving off their customer base, and… Okay. Maybe that’s not in their best interest.

Or maybe that’s not what you are suggesting. It’s not like you were particularly clear.

liftingoffers wrote: “You are paying 20-40% of your properties value a month in So Called Land-Use Fees. These small lots don't have enough prims to do anything or sell anything to generate enough for Land Fees. This is a Canival show Booth!”

I’ve crunched the numbers. Only the two lowest tier levels (512m2 and 1024m2) are over the 20% mark. No tier level even approaches the 40% level you cited. As for “generat[ing] enough for Land Fees”, most people paying tier at those levels are doing it for fun. To have a small house. Or a hobby store.

Just like Real Life, not everyone treats Second Life as an investment. Imagine how silly you would sound if you declared that people who paid 100U$ a year for web hosting were being ripped off because they were not making money from their websites.

People who have relevant skills and talents, and who put the time in, can and do make money in Second Life. And just like in Real Life, most of them don’t become millionaires.

liftingoffers wrote: “So Sl'rs are doing fine now. Well just wait until one currency swings. They drop the value of Lindens and you could be paying more than 100% of the value the property.”

Been there; done that. The L$ lost nearly a third of its value versus the US$ last summer. People griped, people adjusted, and SL continued to grow. Then the L$ recovered its lost value, and the only people left holding the bag were “investors” who tried to make money fast on currency swings.

liftingoffers wrote: “And if you don't pay your Land Use Fees your land goes back to Lindens for nothing.”

My Real Life landlord and local taxing authority are similarly inflexible. Darn them.
