Is the PS3 inviting trouble by supporting mods?
PS3 Fanboy
Apr 12th 2008 4:27PM On a kinda semi-related note, this is part of the reason all the sandbox-ish virtual worlds are trying -so hard- to distance themselves from the Second Life model of wide-open user generated content. Because of poorly scripted rampaging penises.
Lock up a platform, we get spoon fed Corporate content.
Open it up, we get goat.se portals to Paypal.
I kinda trust my peers and I kinda don't.

PS3 Fanboy
Apr 12th 2008 4:19PM I have both consoles, and have no fanboy religion about either (I prefer the 360 yet the PS3 is slowwwly growing on me) however, I've got more friends on XBL.

The Daily Grind: To forum, or not to forum?
Massively
Dec 7th 2007 4:11PM I tend not to even like forums in the first place, but I agree with the commenter about the fansites running them.
Amusingly, when Linden Lab removed a couple key forums, people stormed the blog. So a simple 'Good Morning Second Life' post will result in 48920842930 screaming comments. (Warranted or not is another post).
The other forums do have vibrant communities outside the official sphere and usually come up in search results when seeking out an answer to a particular issue. So, sure, I'll conceded there is a use.
Kinda like a bus. Useful, but thanks, I'll take my car. :)
Why is Second Life not a game?
Massively
Dec 5th 2007 9:22PM Heh, I'd say gamers are *more* prone to ripping on SL because the answer of 'what do I do here?' is met with some answer like shopping.
And the fact that there are FPS, MMOs, RPGs, LARPs, and Driving environments in there is lost, because saying that is like saying 'hey go find great content on YouTube'. It's anarchy and dammit, I'd hate to have to wade through miles and miles of randomness just to get there.
The hype meter tends to peg on creation and platform, which is fine for those that want to create, but not those that want to hang. Things like Halo are reversed: Here's the GAME, oh yeah, if you want, you can create/sandbox, and THAT is exactly why I believe generic and open-ended worlds face the biggest threat--not from each other-- but from a matured infrastructure, the gaming industry.
How am I expected to pwn with an electromagnetic railgun or a set of Black Widows, when the precedent set is a technology that's NOT four million years old? (Read: Havok uh .3 or whatever /heh)
Teen Grid: A sad state of affairs
Massively
Nov 14th 2007 2:21AM I really can't stand that the teens are some second class citizens, all because of our illusions of 'save the children of the world from teh evils!'. Right. Since when does 'teenager' = 'idiot'. Most teens I've encountered with main grid experience, seem to have the same eye-rolling contempt as the rest of us at the goofy behavior that *adults* exhibit.
What's fundamentally irritating to me above all, is that their ENTIRE SOCIAL EXISTENCE ENDS the second they turn 18.
Any product they've purchased on TG? If a LL update happens that breaks the product, are they able to get support? No, because they are magically 'adults' overnight.
The other thing is the vaporization of buddy lists. Today, you are 17 and you have a nice big healthy buddy list. Tomorrow you are 18, goodbye, kaput, RIP. All gone.
Naturally, it's not that bad, these people are smart enough to use the 398429230429 other means of having normal human conversation. There are some builders who have done some great work on the teen grid, and work outside of LL to get it to us on the main grid. In fact, some teens who sneak on to the main grid do it because of product availability.
Maybe it's a Scared American Thing, I don't know. There are predators in every aspect of life (the real issue, not some polygonal boob), and when that gets brought up, somehow, we transform teens into these babbling and useless bundles of carbon that somehow don't matter until the math is right, who need our protection every step of the way.
Ridiculous.
Intellectual property: If it's not nailed down ...
