Patently surprised

Second Life Insider

Sep 27th 2007 11:11PM Just to continue my previous comment...

This is completely unconscionable. Simply by logging in, you surrender your patent rights to LL and absolutely anyone who has logged into SL? How could this possibly stand up in court?

That, I think, is the key. It won't stand up in court, but it will take someone with a crapload of money to even challenge it. Thank you American legal system. Justice for the wealthy.

Patently surprised

Second Life Insider

Sep 27th 2007 11:04PM What does this mean exactly? It appear to mean that if any SL user holds a patent, they surrender all rights to that patent to LL and every SL user simply by logging in. I'm not a lawer, but... that doesn't seem right.

Credit Where Credit is Due

Second Life Insider

Sep 6th 2007 3:31PM A short film featuring images from Second Life doesn't fall into the category of "submitted" content. It's a creative work made outside of SL. It was never given to Linden Lab or posted to their servers. Linden Lab can't claim the rights to any film that includes in whole or part images from the SL environment. This is simply copyright infringement.

I'm guessing that someone on their web team is unclear on what they can and can't use. They can create their own videos and images featuring in-world content without asking permission. If they ask permission from the copyright holder, they can post videos/images created by someone else, or edit them if they get permission to do that. But they CAN'T simply take any image or video that shows the SL environment without permission.

Smooth grid operation becomes rough

Second Life Insider

Sep 6th 2007 10:34AM They must have known about the problem sooner. At about midnight, I contacted a concierge about a replicator attack that was taking down sims -- I'm guessing it's the cause of the gridwide slowdowns. The concierge said they already knew about it.

So it's my guess that it either took a while to find a Linden who could handle that type of attack, or there was something about the fallout from the attack that was particularly difficult to fix.

Jul 31st 2007 4:23PM Haha, comedy classic.

But in all fairness, that suspension bridge was one of the difficult parts of the course, and I saw many avatars fall down the canyon.

Power Outages in SF Affect SL

Second Life Insider

Jul 25th 2007 1:20PM A power outage that takes out DNS servers and affects multiple services... that's preventable by LL how? This is clearly of a scope beyond LL's control.

Resonating with Wind - A Compelling Journey Into the Sky

Second Life Insider

Jul 9th 2007 9:38AM Wind is a strange thing in SL. While making a hot air balloon, I wanted it to drift with the wind. Unlike real life, where there are prevailing winds over large areas, SL winds shift very frequently and drastically, and vary over small areas. It can be calm and southwest on moment, then hurricane speed and northeast two seconds later.

It's interesting to plot the sim-wide patterns, but wind isn't very useful for ballooning or sailing.

Asset server issues

Second Life Insider

Jun 12th 2007 3:16PM It also seems to affect notecards.

These asset problems are especially annoying to me because I'm working on a deadline and I can't test my scripts. Another day lost.

Apr 22nd 2007 11:12PM Check your graphics card driver. According to support, any problem you ask for help on is related to your graphics card driver.

Oh and don't forget to clear your cache.

There are no bugs in SL. No. Bugs. In. Second. Life.

Have a nice day.
