Just Askin': Do you approve of the planned age-verification?
Second Life Insider
May 7th 2007 5:01AM umm hihi
i feel this is a very difficult issue - if LL does nothing, it is open to accusations of exposing children to pornography and paedophiles. if that happened on a big scale, the credit card companies and paypal might refuse to handle payment transactions and that would ruin SL as a business. things are bad enough when the FBI is looking at SL as a potential threat to the laws restricting online gambling in the USA. what should LL do - relocate their operations to somewhere like Spain, as so many other "Adult" online businesses have done? perhaps they SHOULD do this because over 70% of AVs logging in come from Europe, not the Americas.
but what about my civil liberties? if SL wants me to verify my age, how is this going to be done without using access to governmental databases? how, for example, will this 3rd party be able to check a UK national insurance number or driving licence number when these are NOT in the public domain? we are all being constantly warned against identity theft - how will LL be able to convince people they are trustworthy? if this is a US-based company, the track record for data protection in the States is appallingly bad.
i suspect a huge amount of SL activity is Adult and by restricting access, a lot of commercial activity in SL will be harmed by the restrictions. i don't know what the answer is but for LL, "do nothing" is not going to be possible :(
LL Acknowledges Inventory Issues

Apr 18th 2007 10:19AM hihi :)
Torley Linden updated the Official Linden Blog today...
"[Apr. 17 @ 5 PM PDT] Results of our investigation: on Friday (2007-04-13), several hundred thousand Residents’ data was moved to different inventory servers to alleviate load.
Unfortunately, this resulted in problems, because a “transform” sequence erroneously ran multiple times, overwriting data and resulting in some Residents with missing inventories.
Currently, we’ve examined the logs and identified 9 Residents with entire inventories missing, and 42 with partially “messed-up” inventory. We’re sorry if you’re among the affected; we’re working quickly to restore each of these inventories from backups, and hoping all goes well.
Please note the above applies to this specific issue. There are a number of earlier inventory loss issues that’ve affected more Residents, which appear to have similar or the same root causes. We’re also working on these..."
i hope they can resolve things for us - 3 of my friends and me - we all suffered partial inventory loss and hopefully this will be fixed soon :)

Apr 17th 2007 8:55AM okies i can add more details to this - i know of at least 4 people who lost the prims they were wearing yesterday 16th April 07 - things like jewelry etc. the items are shown in Inventories but not found when you try to wear them.
none of us have received replies from the Lindens yet...i estimate my personal losses to about 1500L which as a non-premium member is hard to recover :(
does anyone have any more info please?
